There are plenty of options available for cruisers heading to the Norwegian Fjords, with many sailings conveniently departing from the UK. Some itineraries focus exclusively on the fjords themselves, while others take in other parts of Norway, such as Oslo; visit the Baltic; or even go all the way to Iceland and Greenland.
Cruises dedicated to the fjords typically last between seven and 14 nights. These can either focus on visiting spectacular western fjords like Sognefjord, Nordfjord and Geirangerfjord, or head farther north, past the Arctic Circle. During the autumn, winter and spring, many cruise lines offer Northern Lights cruises that visit northern Norway and call at ports like Narvik, Tromsø, Alta and Kirkenes. These give guests ample opportunity to see the Lights both in port (often with overnight stays), and onboard, away from any light pollution.
The majority of UK sailings leave from Southampton, but there are also departures from Liverpool (with stops in Dublin and the Shetland Islands), Edinburgh, Dover, London Tilbury and Newcastle. A voyage from Southampton usually includes two days at sea before reaching Norway, which is reduced to one day at sea from Newcastle.
There are a wide range of fly cruises available as well, departing from European ports such as Copenhagen and Amsterdam, and Norwegian cities like Oslo and Bergen. The most famous Fjords cruise line is the Hurtigruten, which specialises in journeys from Bergen all the way up the coast to Kirkenes in the far north. Hurtigruten cruises use smaller ships and visit more out-of-the-way villages, making for a unique experience away from the crowds.
