With each season bringing something new and unique to the Norwegian Fjords, there’s no wrong time to cruise this amazing destination. Choosing when to go will largely depend on your preferred climate and whether you would like your visit to coincide with natural phenomena like the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun.
The Fjords’ peak season is from May to September, when this northerly land is at its most clement and high temperatures can reach the mid twenties. In autumn it’s cooler but no less beautiful, as the landscape transforms into an array of reds and golds, while in spring the melting snows swell the mountainside waterfalls, and newborn lambs frolic in the blooming meadows.
If you’re travelling north of the Arctic Circle from mid-May to July, you’ll be able to experience the magic of the Midnight Sun, when the sun never dips fully below the horizon. Northern Norway is also the best place to see the Northern Lights, which are visible from September to April. The weather can be cloudier in midwinter, so to maximise your chances of seeing the Lights in their prime, it’s recommended to go in (late) September, October, February or March.
If you do travel during midwinter, you’ll be treated to fairytale scenes of frozen lakes, snow-draped mountains and festive lights – just remember to bring some extra-thick clothing!
